DIASTEMA DENTAL TREATMENT

DIASTEMA DENTAL TREATMENT

Diastema is the condition where there are larger or disproportionate gaps between the teeth than normal. The most common cause is that the teeth are smaller compared to the jaw. Gum surgeries or loss of front teeth can also cause the spaces between teeth to widen.

Diastema can cause not only aesthetic concerns but also some health problems for the patient. Patients with diastema have a mouth structure more prone to bacterial and plaque accumulation because of the unusual gaps between the teeth. Additionally, frequent speech difficulties can occur due to the tongue getting caught in these gaps.
Diastema can be treated with various methods.

DIASTEMA TREATMENT METHODS
When determining the appropriate treatment for diastema (gap between teeth), the distance between the teeth is first evaluated. Based on the measurement of the gap, there are three commonly used treatment methods.

Composite Veneer (Composite Bonding)
This is a practical method used when the gap between teeth is minimal and for minor tooth wear or chips. It involves covering the teeth forming the gap with a composite material to enlarge them. Usually, the treatment is completed in a single session. Since it is more delicate compared to other methods, the teeth treated with composite veneers need to be protected.

Porcelain Laminate (Veneer)
This method is used for mild to moderate tooth gaps and chips. In this treatment, the tooth surfaces are suitably ground, laminates are prepared according to the tooth measurement, and glued onto the tooth. Compared to composite veneer, it is more durable and permanent. Treatment is generally completed in 2-3 sessions.

Orthodontic Treatment
This is the preferred treatment method in cases of severe tooth gaps and bite disorders. It is performed while preserving the patient's natural teeth. The treatment duration is longer than other methods but provides a permanent solution.
